Split AC Buying Guide: Tonnage, Star Rating and Inverter Technology

An air conditioner that is the right size for your room cools faster, runs quieter and costs less to run.

Match tonnage to room size

• Up to 120 sq ft: 1 ton
• 120–180 sq ft: 1.5 ton
• 180–250 sq ft: 2 ton

Rooms on the top floor, with large windows or in very hot cities may need the next size up.

Why inverter?

Inverter compressors change speed instead of switching on and off, holding the temperature steadily and using less electricity — especially when the AC runs for many hours a day.

Star rating

A 5 star AC costs more upfront but saves on electricity every month. If you use your AC for long hours, the higher rating usually pays back.
